Can buying a rice cooker help you lose weight?

Well, for folks who are on a diet plan, it may very well help out. A common myth about rice is that since it is high in starch and carbohydrates it must be fattening. However, it is when folks use flavor-enhancers like butter, for example, mixed in with their rice is what packs on the extra unwanted calories. That along with the other fatty foods the rice may be eaten with.

Rice by itself when consumed in recommended portions is not all that fattening.

In fact, having brown rice with dinner in normal-sized portions is actually a good healthy way to help shed some pounds. It fills you up quickly, and in combination with drinking a glass of water (or wu long tea) 10 to 15 minutes before a meal, and then another during the meal will make your appetite feel more satisfied…and much sooner.

So where does a rice cooker come in to play?

Simply put, buying a rice cooker that has a steaming tray, and more importantly allows you to simultaneously steam food while the rice is cooking is a great way to complete an entire healthy meal that is low in fat, tastes great, and will fill you up. All while using an energy efficient appliance.

Here is a good basic rice cooker recipe to follow when in the mood for a healthy rice dinner.

What You Will Need
1) 1 cup of brown rice
2) 1 whole sweet potato or yam peeled and cut in to bite-sized cubes
3) two peeled garlic cloves diced or chopped as desired
4) 3 or 4 whole peeled asparagus
5) 2 level teaspoons of Herb ox non-MSG chicken seasoning
6) 1 level teaspoon of curry powder (optional)
7) 1 level tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
8) 2 or 3 diced pepperoncini peppers
9) 1 small can of sliced black olives
10) one small can Italian style tuna fish (Cento or Pastene brands)

Directions

In a 5.5 cup capacity (or greater) rice cooker add 1 rice-cooker-sized cup rinsed brown rice, and fill approx. between the “1 and 2 Cup” water level line in the rice cooker bowl. Let rice soak for 20 minutes.

Press the cook button and wait until water comes to a boil.

Add in olive oil and Herb ox seasoning to water, stir, and place diced sweet potatoes, asparagus, and garlic to steaming tray. Place tray on top of cooker and close lid. Steam and cook until the rice cooker switches to the keep warm mode.

When the cooker clicks to the keep warm mode open lid and remove steam tray, (using caution) and mix in optional curry seasoning, black olives, and diced peppers. Stir well, replace tray, and close lid allowing the rice to fluff for 10 minutes.

Scoop out your mixed rice into a bowl, add tuna fish, diced sweet potato, and asparagus on top and enjoy! You can substitute hot chili peppers for a more spicy/sweet dish and/or steam shrimp instead of using canned tuna.

This is a low cost and basic healthy meal that is low in fat, tastes great, and is easy to make.
